5 Spring Beauty Must Haves for the Busy Professional

Spring 2018 is here and it’s a perfect reason to update your beauty game. I have played with a lot of new goodies and some old hits as well. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel when it comes to items that work. I tend to look at products I’m always reaching for and make me feel bawse on the regular. Being someone who not only blogs but also holds a professional role and is an entrepreneur, I need products that go the distance from catching a flight to sealing the deal over cocktails.

Just like your Spring cleaning, you should make sure everything you have is actually something you can use. I know when working with some of my beauty clients, people tend to hang on to products just to have it. If it’s not adding to your life then it needs to go.  I often will give products I don’t love to family and friends or if it’s a lot, I will donate to a local women’s shelter in order to spread the joy of beauty!

Spring Fresh: How to get the that face in 20 minutes

The birds are chirping outside my window on this bright glorious morning. I have a meeting with a potential client for my consulting firm later this afternoon. As I do some daily self- reflection I notice I feel uninspired. As someone who is constantly burning both ends of the candle, I run the risk of burnout quite often. This is the plight of many women out there especially those who are aspiring entrepreneurs or those who are on their corporate ladder grind.

Makeup is often seen as a luxe item or optional item, however,  I beg to differ. What you invest in, will produce results. I invest in my appearance and personal development in return, I have grown by leaps and bounds. You don’t have to be rich to look it. To advance in life how you package yourself matters.  As a black woman, it’s easy to put on this mule mentality where you don’t take the proper time to care for your own needs. Being someone who is transitioning from that mentality, it hasn’t been easy but I know I’m worth the time.  If you plan what is important to you, you will see results. If you want to see a better you this is the perfect time to start investing.

Spring Revamp Fashion: How to refresh your closet on a Budget!

Bright prints and florals will always be the spring fashion staples. I adore wearing bold colors as my skin looks amazing in them. Now some parts of the country are stilling getting this white stuff that falls from the sky, but being in Texas we are enjoying wonderful cardigan weather. I’m always on the web looking for fashion inspo for the office. I got a lot from this article from ThredUp.  Working in corporate doesn’t have to be boring nor complicated. I don’t allow myself to be boxed in by what people think is plus fashion, I always will push the envelope and try new things.

Wardrobe Temperature Check

As I looked through my closet, I began to start taking into account what fits me well and what must go.

. I also took into account my weight loss. As my weight decreases, I want to make sure my favorite items still add to my image.  It’s nothing worse than a nice garment that doesn’t positively contribute to your life. It’s like a boy who well isn’t great.

Now that I know what’s in my closet, I created a list of pieces I really wanted to try this season. I really adore bright, hyper-feminine items. It’s something that feels bad ass when I wear things that people don’t believe should be done by a plus chick or professional. As a woman in these corporate streets, many believe you have to wear boring drab fashion. As long as I am alive, I will fight that with dope fashion.

Updating your wardrobe doesn’t have to break the bank. I first hit my local thrift stores to see what they have that can hit my goals. I also hit one my favorite site, Thredup an online thrift store that has amazing brands and up to 70% off retail. We can always use extra coins in her purse lol.

The Results

Outfit 1- Walking on Sunshine

I picked this bright yellow Eloquii skirt from ThredUp that instantly felt like a sunny day. Wear pieces that make you happy, your mood and bounce will change. I am a big supporter of rocking whatever the hell you want. Bozma St. John defines what a woman should wear to the office. Own your power ladies and rock out. I paired it with my other love, stripes. The nautical vibe screams wealth and lavish in my book.

Can I get into the party: How Body Positivity affects the Black Woman

As a plus size influencer, I focus on areas of life that really can help you live your most festive life. For many women, their weight is a source of pain or celebrity. If you’re fit and trim you may receive better treatment than those who may not be. Those who may be more on the thicker side of life may notice their weight is a sore spot. I know looking at my life, I was ridiculed for being fat. After a while, I began to just accept that this was my life.

The Plus Journey

In 2011, I started the process of taking control of my life and losing weight. After about 1 year I had lost upwards of a 100lbs. This was an exciting yet scary time in my life. I was getting the attention that I had never received and I couldn’t enjoy the process as I was so wrapped up in getting to this token weight. As life would have it,

I am a black woman who by society terms isn’t acceptable.I have said before in an older post, that non-curvy plus woman are often marginalized.  Plus size women that are non-black are more accepted and the body positivity movement in a way is more so for them not black plus size women. If you have the hourglass figure you may be more fetishized, but where does that leave the more apple shaped women?  From dating prospects to job prospects to blogging opportunities those who aren’t built in more socially constructed “feminine” figure aren’t shown the love that others may get.  A black woman who isn’t curvy is often the butt of jokes and there is a  disregard for our existence. Black and Beautiful: Heart Health

black woman in active wear SheFit Sports Bra

February is the month of love. Well, self-love is the best love ever which includes taking care of your whole self. Fitness is such an important factor in helping your life as it helps you do all things you love. Sometimes we take the simplest of things for granted like being able to take a shower on our own to going to Sephora and buying all the makeup. The line of work I’m in, I am exposed to many people who wish they could get up and drop it like 99 to 2000 let alone get up and walk to the fridge.

Your heart is a powerhouse in your life. For black women especially heart disease is extremely prevalent. From the pains of obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes to lack of quality care. According to National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. About 49% of African American women over age 20 have some type of heart disease, like:

  • Clogged arteries in the heart, arms, or legs
  • Stroke
  • High blood pressure
  • Angina (chest pain)

That means nearly 1 in every 2 Black women in the U.S. has heart disease. As I researched more about heart health, it dawned on me the plight of the black woman especially being that I am one. We are twice as more affected by the plight of our health than white women. Now, this isn’t a racism issue but it’s an access to a higher quality of life issue. We must firmly and confidently take back our health. Being stressed over the life can cause a whole host of issues that run from physical to mental health.

I still mourn the loss of activist Erica Garner who passed away at the end of 2017. She had a heart attack and we lost a beautiful soul. I don’t want to lose any more women to things that can be prevented. You have to take responsibility for your life ladies. At times life becomes overwhelming with goals, family, trying to be cute, however, if you want to be able to operate on a level of excellence you must make time for what matters most.

Heart Health Tips

1. Getting a workout in is a great step in having a healthy heart. Cardio is one of the easiest things that will help you work your heart. From the treadmill to the running trail will help you get that heart rate up and help make it stronger. The more you work out and push yourself past comfort—not to be confused with pushing too hard. Before starting any workouts you must go to the doctor ladies. Once cleared start by working out 3 times a week for 20 minutes. This will help slowly build your endurance and heart. I have made Youtube videos of at home workouts that can be done anywhere here and here.black woman smiling on treadmill Read more
